When I was writing my article about compulsion, the scene from Seinfeld where George Costanza reflected on his life came to mind. In that scene, George realized that every decision he has made in his life has been wrong. Therefore, he concluded if every decision was wrong then the opposite must be right. I remember watching that scene years ago thinking that was brilliant. Those harmful compulsions can have a profound impact on your life. Those compulsions do not have your best interest at heart. There is a powerful message to be learned from that realization.
Through years of negative reinforcement, George was compelled to react to life in a certain way. Many of us can relate to this consummation. If the way you think about things is negatively impacting your life, then do the opposite. Change the way you think. If you focus on the negative in your life, then the negative will magically manifest around you. If you focus on the positive in your life, then the positive will magically manifest around you. Sounds too simple, right? Like the Bruce Lee quote says, “As you think, so shall you become,” you are what you think and believe.
To truly change your life, you have to get out of your comfort zone. You have to do the one thing you’re terrified to do…CHANGE. That is the only way to grow and transform your life. To live the life you want to live, you must get out of your comfort zone and take some risks. What you give to the world comes back to you tenfold. If your life has been all wrong up until this moment, then do the opposite. If all your decisions have been wrong then doing the opposite must be right. There is a lot of truth behind that statement.
