“I think it’s in our nature to try to get beyond that next horizon. I think that when we, as a species, are scratching that itch, we’re actually following an evolutionary compulsion that is wired into us. I think good things come of it.” – Ron Howard
Many of us get the compulsion to do things we can’t quite explain. As some of you are aware, I have been a writing madman lately. I can’t explain it other than I have this overwhelming compulsion to keep writing. I’m now realizing I have an untapped creative side that must be released. Maybe I’ll write a book one day. Perhaps this is just my relief from this crazy brain of mine, self-therapy in blog format. I don’t have any clue where this is going, but I’m acting on this compulsion.
Compulsions don’t always have your best interest at heart though. For example, if you have an innate sexual affinity for sheep, then please don’t act on your urges…seek some help you sick bastard. I’m referring to those deep, innate compulsions that drive you toward something positive. If you are compelled to write, paint, build, climb a mountain, swim with sharks, start a business or anything else that will positively affect your life and the lives of others, then please act on your compulsions. These intrinsic desires are those evolutionary compulsions of transformation.
Compulsions could be your passions knocking at the door. Don’t ask WHY they’re knocking; you may not get the answer you’re seeking right away. Somethings need time to evolve, so trust the process. Take immediate action; don’t wait 45 years to act on those compulsions. Better late than never though. Don’t let those talents or desires go unfulfilled. Compulsions may take you down paths you never imagined you would travel. I never believed I would be into writing, music, and woodworking for enjoyment, or maybe I did and pushed them aside to satisfy my action junkie side all those years.
I’m going to trust the process and ride this wave wherever it leads me. Maybe I’m just quieting this crazy, restless brain of mine or on my way to millions. Who knows. Who cares. I’m just going to trust the process and enjoy the ride. Honestly, it’s a win-win for me either way. Some of you may be reading this realizing you have a passion you haven’t acted on. What are you waiting on? There is no ideal time, move on those evolutionary compulsions. Find what drives you and hone it…except you sheep lovers, seriously get some freaking help!
